May 28, 2020 – Face Masks

Canada’s chief public health officer, Teresa Tam, recently announced a recommendation for the use of non-medical masks or face coverings as an “added layer of protection” whenever physical distancing is not possible.  We encourage members to consider the use of face masks as you arrive at and exit the courts.  There are areas on the property, such as the walkway between the courts and the clubhouse, where the use of a mask may provide some level of protection if physical distancing is not possible.  Of course, attention to hand washing, use of sanitizer, and careful observation of the movement of others around you are all necessary practices to maintain.

Apr 6, 2020 – City of Ottawa Updates

The City of Ottawa sends us updates which we are posting on this page: elmdale.ca/city-of-ottawa-updates/

As of April 6: City facilities, which includes Elmdale Tennis Club, are closed until at least June 30th.

Mar 24, 2020 – Covid-19: message from the board.

Events are quickly evolving as our local government puts the necessary controls in place to manage the impact of COVID-19 in Ottawa. We want to share with you the latest information we have received from City Wide Sports Programming, regarding City tennis programming:

Public Courts in Ottawa

Typically tennis/pickleball courts open by the end of May. Installation of nets occurs during the month of April, however snow, ground frost and repairs play a role in determining when each court can open.  Unfortunately courts will not open any earlier than normal for play this year. If nets are installed too early with frost/wet/soft ground conditions, tightening the nets will cause the tennis posts to lean, requiring a costly re-instatement/replacement.

Membership Tennis Clubs in Ottawa

In response to the Government of Ontario’s emergency declaration, and to help protect our clients and the public from COVID-19, all City of Ottawa recreation and cultural facilities, including recreation complexes, community centres, arenas, swimming pools, theatres and museums are closed until further notice. This includes City of Ottawa membership tennis clubs. Due to the season, this currently only affects Tennis Centre West Ottawa.

Please refer to City of Ottawa/Recreation and Ottawa Public Health  for up to date information on the situation.

Elmdale Tennis Club always tries to have the courts ready for play during the first week of May.  Given the direction from the City,  we cannot predict a date by which the Club will be open for play this spring. We regret this situation and hope to have positive information for you regarding the Club later in the spring.

In the meantime, given the current closure of the Tennis Centre West Ottawa, we are cancelling our spring social event that was to be held on 19 April.  As soon as City sporting services return to a more normal footing, we will be in touch regarding social events and tennis programs for Elmdale members.

Please let us know if you have any questions regarding the current situation (info@elmdale.ca).  We look forward to seeing everyone on the tennis courts as soon as possible.

Elmdale Tennis Club Board of Directors

Feb 12, 2020 – Club Update

Feb 12, 2020 – Club Update: Court Renewal Fund & Membership Fee Structure

For the 2020 season, the current Board of Directors sees the pressing need for court renewal as the key issue of importance to the Elmdale Tennis Club.  The issue has a direct impact on how the Club’s tennis program operates, and how we manage our resources, including membership fees, in the best interests of the Club membership.

We want to ensure the best tennis experience for our members and campers.  The state of the clay courts is an essential ingredient in achieving this goal and their maintenance and upkeep are central to the long-term viability and reputation of the Club.

The Club’s clay courts are well past the date for renewal.  Current estimates place the cost of court renewal alone at approximately $300,000.  In addition, the watering system requires replacement/upgrade. As a result, current estimates for complete renewal of the courts is estimated at around $400,000.

In 2019, the Board put aside $50,000 and the 2020 Board has set a goal of putting aside $35,000 in a Reserve Fund.  Even optimistic projections suggest that the Club’s courts will not be renewed for approximately four to five years.

The Club has limited avenues for revenue generation:  as a not for profit organization, the Club may not seek a loan.  The City of Ottawa, owner of the tennis facility, has very limited resources to support club maintenance and upgrades.

At present we see three avenues for revenue generation for ongoing club operations and for contributions to the Reserve Fund for court renewal: grants; contributions from the neighbourhood business community; and, membership and camp enrollment.

  1. Grants. The Board of Directors has developed a grant proposal under the Ontario Ministry of Infrastructure, Community, Culture and Recreation stream.  We are awaiting word on acceptance. Given competition for limited funding across the province, we are only moderately hopeful that the grant proposal will provide funding to Elmdale for our court renewal project.
  2. Business Community Engagement. Under the leadership of Board member Joel Diener, we hope to engage local businesses in advertising and banner opportunities which will generate new revenues for the Club.  The Board intends to direct any new revenues from this venture to the Reserve Fund.
  3. Membership and Camp Enrolment. Revenues from membership and camp enrolment remain our largest sources of funds.

Our rates for camps are consistent with similar programs at other clubs in the city and we recognize that it is important to our members to limit the size of camps and their court usage through July and August.  Thus, we believe we have maximized revenue from this source.

The better part of Club revenues come from membership fees.  The Board considers membership levels and categories on an annual basis.  We gather information on the fee structures of similar clubs and consider our own demographics in making decisions on the annual membership fee structure and categories.

Given the popularity of Elmdale, the total membership count has been capped at approximately 400.  The original decision to cap membership took place in 2015 and remains in place. Since 2015, the proportion of members at age 60 and over has risen each year.  Given the preference to returning members to register first, and the membership cap, we forecast the number of members over 60 to continue to rise each year. In a fee structure that includes a reduced rate for seniors, the Club’s main source of revenue will diminish steadily over time.

We know from looking at other tennis clubs’ fee structures that not all clubs include a category for seniors.  Looking at the other clay court clubs, three do not have a category for seniors; while two others do but they start at 65.

The decision to drop the senior category was not an easy one.  We understand and sympathize with the membership’s desire to continue to support our older members with a fee reduction.  That said, as a Board, we also see the need to ensure an overall fair approach to membership fees, to sustain the revenue stream from membership, and attain our medium term goal of court renewal, in the interests of all members.

2017

Oct 7, 2017 – October Update

What an amazing season we’ve had. Still hoping for another month of tennis but we are now at the mercy of Mother Nature. I would like to thank Olivier, Ethan, McGregor and James for their incredible hard work and dedication this season. Very privileged to have worked alongside these gentlemen. I would like to thank Michael Pederson for his 2 year term as President.  Michael has served tirelessly during his tenure as President, exhibiting what it truly means to be a member of the Elmdale community. I would also like to congratulate Cathy Goldsbrough of her appointment to President for the 2018 season. I would like to recognize the efforts of the Board of Directors. A HUGE thank you to Catherine, Cathy, Pavel, Nigel, Grant, Phil for making this season as awesome as it was. Many hours were put in helping out at various events, making important club decisions and making sure the club is running smoothly for years to come. A big shoutout to Rachel Cruickshank for another awesome
year as club pro. Good luck in the winter! I would like to thank the summer camp staff for another fantastic summer. Lots of smiles and energy were brought into the club. I would finally like to you, the Elmdale community for making Elmdale Tennis Club the special place that it is. I have had the pleasure and honour of servicing the club for the past 3 years. I’ve learned and grown immensely from time here. I will cherish the conversations, chirps and hits moving forward. My advice for next year: come out to events, hit with someone who you’ve never hit with before, encourage your fellow tennis player, continue being the positive influences that you are. Elmdale is a very special place and so lets keep it that way.

Here are some final notes for the end of the season.

Hi everyone,

Its that time of year again… Singles Club Championships! July 28th until August 4th (or until its done!). The Women’s draw will be a little different this year. There will be groups of 4 with each player playing all the other players in their group (3 matches). The winner from the group stage will move on to the knockout rounds and it will then play out like a normal draw.  This was done based on the feedback of previous years where participants expressed their interest for a greater number of matches. For the group stage, matches will be played in a pro set format (first to 8 games). In the knockout stage, matches will be 2 out of 3 sets. The Men’s draw will be a regular single elimination draw, 2 out of 3 sets. Entry fee is $10 and is payable at your first match. We want this to be the biggest draw ever so please sign up and encourage your friends to do the same. There will be BBQs going on throughout the tournament. Come on out and support your fellow competitors! Sign up at the club or give Chris an email – halliday93.chris@gmail.com.

Sep 26, 2013 – Wine and Chocolate TASTING – Saturday, September 28

Wine and Chocolate TASTING
Saturday, September 28
6 pm Doubles Round Robin
8 pm TASTING

In celebration of a wonderful season – the ETC will be hosting a wine and chocolate tasting this Saturday – following one of our last doubles round robins.

In a effort to thank all the members for making this year such a success, the ETC will cover the cost of the chocolate and any added accouterment — of which there’ll be plenty — while the entry fee for each participating member is a bottle of wine.  Meaning:  It’s just like a pot luck but for wine… If you are a wine drinker, you will need to bring a bottle with a price tag of no less than $15.  If you are not a wine connoisseur and still want to come, by all means – beers and sodas will be on sale at the bar as always.

Please sign up or call/e-mail the club by Friday, September 27, so we can be sure to order enough chocolate!!!

We’ll also be passing the hat for The Shepherds of Good Hope in Memory of fellow member and bon vivant Meg Dussault – who passed away quite unexpectedly one mid-summer evening returning home from the club.

Sep 17, 2013 – Elmdale Open Doubles Final, Davis Cup and a Wedding

Elmdale Open Doubles Final – 6-3,6-7,7-5

Best described as a squeaker, the wisdom and experience of our ETC doubles team Marcos Valencia and Peter Worthing was enough to pull themselves back from a 5-1 deficit in the second set, but not enough to take this year’s ETC Doubles title in the third and deciding set. After close to three hours of world class tennis – WTA ranked Elizabeth Fournier and her partner Adrian Frei carried the day – only after being forced to produce some unbelievable returns rarely witnessed on the ETC courts. The club extends it’s appreciation to all those who participated, and wishes Elizabeth the very best as she returns to the tour. And a special thanks to Marcos, as ETC head of tennis operations, for organizing all the tournaments this season.

Davis Cup

Elmdonia rules the day!

In a hard fought contest Nigel, Alexis, Graham and Patty – all Elmdonia nationals – managed to outflank Italy, the Czech Republic (without any Czech’s if you can believe it) and Chinada – to win this year’s ETC Davis Cup. It was clear, by the time the fence gate was locked late into the night – ending the now infamous and long-standing DC pot luck dinner – that there were few losers to be had. Thanks again for all those who participated, adding to the list of ETC success stories for the 2013 season…

An ETC weekend tied up in knots!

Not only are we ecstatic about launching the new ETC web site this weekend – we’re also over-the-moon to announce that ETC manager Matt MacKinnon was married on Saturday and we wish him and his new bride the very best!

Sep 9, 2013 – 2013 Davis Cup

The fall tennis season and is fast approaching, and with it THE ETC DAVIS CUP.

Please register with Matt at the club or better yet – fill out the signup sheet that is posted. You can join one of the countries already on the list or create one of your own – players are invited to invent a fictitious country if they like. And of course all nationals are expected to contribute towards a potluck dinner that is more or less indigenous to the country they are playing for – which some would say is the best part of the day!

Event details:

Saturday, September 14
Assembling of the delegates: 2:30 pm
Play begins: 2:45 pm
Potluck: Sometime after 5pm
